Since we’re heading to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers…
1959 World Series - White Sox vs. Dodgers
Games in Los Angeles were played in the L.A. Coliseum. The left field fence was only 251 feet (with a 42 foot fence) from home plate. The right-center field fence was 440 feet away. Game 5 has the record for attendance with 92,706.
In 1959, The Baltimore Orioles-White Sox game at Comiskey Park was delayed for nearly half an hour as a swarm of gnats overcame the field. Groundskeepers tried using bug sprays and torches, but the gnats wouldn’t budge. A post-game fireworks display was brought in from center field and a smoke bomb was attached to the framework to finally get them to leave after a 30 minute delay.
On a sadder note, on this date in 1941, Lou Gehrig, one of my favorite non-Sox players, died in New York. He was only 37.
